I grew up in Cedar Falls, Iowa and earned a B.S. in Geology at the University of Northern Iowa in 1988. I attended graduate school at Indiana University where I earned both an M.S. (1990) and Ph.D. (1994) in Geology. I was hired by the Western Illinois University Department of Geology (now the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Geographic Information Sciences) in 1994 and have been teaching here ever since.
I have taught a wide variety of courses in geology and, in the past, in environmental studies. My research specialty is water resources (surface water and groundwater). I have been McDonough County Groundwater Protection Education Committee member e since 2001 and have served as its chair since 2006. I have been a member of the Illinois Groundwater Association since 1996, have served as treasurer since 2003, and have served as a director, vice-chair, and chair in past years.
My wife and I live in an old farmhouse outside of Macomb with our five cats (now that our sons are in college). We enjoy visiting parks with cool geology (she is a geologist too), hiking, craft beer, and board games.
